Query completed in 0.66 seconds [2021-02-26 01:35:33] <Z-Man> Lucifer_arma: The raspi no, but who knows where cloud servers really are? https://xkcd.com/908/ [2021-02-26 14:43:14] <-- Z-Man has quit (Ping timeout: 264 seconds) [2021-02-26 14:43:24] --> Z-Man has joined the channel [2021-02-26 17:13:12] <Lucifer_arma> the first node has arrived for my supercomputer :) [2021-02-26 17:13:39] <Lucifer_arma> the gigabit switch is in my RV (it was one of the things the thief left behind), so I still need to retrieve it. [2021-02-26 17:14:11] <Lucifer_arma> I'm starting by putting the db on a raspberry pi 4 4GB. It was the cheapest way to get a faster filesystem than my laptop. [2021-02-26 17:14:17] <Lucifer_arma> I'll call it Landru. :) [2021-02-26 17:16:04] <Lucifer_arma> if it performs reasonably well, I'm probably going to put my son's laptop for the media machine and grab that pi (which is also a 4GB) as the second node [2021-02-26 21:13:57] <-- Z-Man has quit (Ping timeout: 240 seconds) [2021-02-26 21:15:29] --> Z-Man has joined the channel [2021-02-26 21:41:13] <Lucifer_arma> that's disappointing. The Pi was DOA. [2021-02-26 22:38:25] <luke-jr> https://ownyourbits.com/2019/02/02/whats-wrong-with-the-raspberry-pi/ [2021-02-26 23:22:14] <Lucifer_arma> luke-jr: that's interesting. Some of it is out of date. Specifically, the USB/Gigabit Ethernet problem is fixed in the Pi 4. At least, the speed problem is, I don't know about whether or not USB and ethernet are competing for bandwidth [2021-02-26 23:23:04] <Lucifer_arma> that's not an issue for me, right now, though, because I'm not going to be using the USB bus. I need the gigabit ethernet, and I need the fast sd card reader for the database [2021-02-26 23:23:32] <Lucifer_arma> the bit about the GPU running its own kernel that controls everything is real interesting, and obviously problematic [2021-02-26 23:24:05] <Lucifer_arma> it does seem more like the old-school BIOS, though, and it's just being run by the GPU instead of some other microcontroller for space/power reasons [2021-02-26 23:24:17] <Lucifer_arma> of course, the fact that the BIOS continues to be a closed source blob is problematic [2021-02-26 23:25:01] <Lucifer_arma> the power complaints definitely were more oriented around people simply not understanding how to power their Pis, and as a result, using substandard gear [2021-02-26 23:26:39] <Lucifer_arma> I'm a little surprised he didn't call out the wifi antenna problem. If you get a decent aluminum case, the wifi antenna doesn't work, so you may as well not have wifi. [2021-02-26 23:27:10] <Lucifer_arma> I haven't had any luck with bluetooth, either, but I don't need either of those. [2021-02-26 23:27:53] <Lucifer_arma> I also shopped around looking for an alternative that was in the same price range, same physical size (preferably the same form factor), and I just couldn't find anything [2021-02-26 23:28:06] <Lucifer_arma> if I loosen up budget and size requirements, there's plenty of mini-itx stuff out there [2021-02-26 23:50:30] <-- Lucifer_arma has quit (Read error: No route to host) [2021-02-26 23:51:21] --> Lucifer_arma has joined the channelView entire month
